Different scholars have different definitions of the term "metaverse"——

• Professor Shenyang, School of Journalism, Tsinghua University: "The metaverse is a new type of Internet application and social form that combines reality and virtual reality generated by integrating a variety of new technologies. It provides immersive experience based on extended reality technology, and digital twin technology generates a mirror of the real world. It builds an economic system through blockchain technology, closely integrates the virtual world and the real world in the economic system, social system, and identity system, and allows each user to produce and edit content.,The metaverse is still a constantly developing and evolving concept, and different participants constantly enrich its meaning in their own ways."

• Some scholars can cross define the metaverse from the four aspects of space-time, authenticity, independence and connectivity through the "archaeology" of the concept and concept of the metaverse: from the perspective of space-time, the metaverse is a virtual digital world in the space dimension and the real digital world in the time dimension; From the perspective of authenticity, there are both digital replicas of the real world and creations of the virtual world in the metaverse; From the perspective of independence, the metaverse is a parallel space that is closely connected with and highly independent of the external real world; From the perspective of connectivity, the metaverse is a sustainable and wide-coverage virtual reality system that includes networks, hardware terminals and users.

To be precise, the metaverse is not a new concept or technology. It is more a conceptualization under extended reality (XR), blockchain, cloud computing, digital twins and other technologies.

On September 13, 2022, the National Science and Technology Terminology Examination and Approval Committee held a symposium on the concept of metaverse and core terms. After in-depth discussion, experts and scholars at the conference reached a consensus on the names and definitions of three core concepts, including "metaverse" – in English "metaverse" is defined as "a virtual world constructed by human beings using digital technology, which is mapped or transcended by the real world and can interact with the real world".
